The new plugin lists no specific application and BRPL/blah as the generic Type. We also noted a difference between the two QuickTime Plugin files that may account for some of the problems and possibly lead to a simpler solution (we are checking): If you select Show Info/Application, the old plugin lists Netscape Communicator as the "specific application" and "NSPL Netscape plugin" as the generic Type. It appears the IE is smart enough to find the plugin it wants, even if you have renamed it." However, I renamed the new 5.0B version from a backup to "NewQuickTime ugin," put it back into the proper place, and now QuickTime works in both OmniWeb and IE once again. However, QuickTime will then no longer work in IE. If you reinstall the old plug-in QuickTme will work again in OmniWeb after you quit and relaunch it. I keep backups of my OS X volumes, so it was no trouble for me to revert to the old version, which was Created and Modified on and is version 5.0.

Update: Solution: David Butler replies: "The new version of Internet Explorer does indeed install an updated QuickTime Plugin in the Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Update: Andy Schimming adds that this problem extends to iCab and possibly Fizzila 5/09. This appears to be the new version installed by Explorer. It is listed as version 5.0B, last modified on May 1. However, in our case, in the Library/Internet Plug-ins folder, there is a file called QuickTime ugin. Christian suggested that Explorer must have installed a new version of the QuickTime Plugin. We tried it and can confirm this is the case.
